Serving people of all ages, HIMA USA creates musical experiences that inspire a lifelong musical practice and enhance our appreciation of human connections through music making.

HIMA USA brings together an intergenerational community of musicians in which each program will enhance and inspire the others, fostering a supportive community of chamber music lovers. Over five days, participants will experience a full immersion in string playing with chamber music coachings by world-class faculty, string technique workshops, master classes, chamber music readings, community engagement, concerts, and talks as well as access to fun recreational, cultural and social activities in the scenic lakefront community of Lakeside Chautauqua.

HIMA USA is inspired by and is a sister festival to the Icelandic music festival Harpa International Music Academy (HIMA) of which founder Sibbi Bernhardsson is also Artistic Director. Building upon the success of the nearly ten-year-old Icelandic festival, and Sibbi’s Icelandic roots, HIMA USA will incorporate successful elements from the Icelandic HIMA festival.

HIMA USA will offer three core programs in its summer music festival:

1) Advanced String Quartet Intensive for pre-formed young professional quartets

This is an elite, high-level string quartet workshop for two string quartets selected by competitive audition process. The two quartets will attend HIMA USA on full scholarship and will be provided with free housing and meals.

2) Chamber Music Intensive

Serving serious, pre-formed string chamber music ensembles, participants will receive daily coachings from world-class chamber music faculty, daily time for chamber music rehearsals, performance opportunities, housing, and 2 meals daily.

3) Junior Strings Workshop for children ages 7-12.

Serving children ages 7-12 studying violin, viola or cello, this is a program for children to elevate their string technique and ensemble playing skills, gain early experience in playing chamber music, and receive immersive music instruction from experienced, high level string faculty.

The HIMA USA festival will take place from August 13 - 19, 2023.
